I had Leah and Monica on subsequent days. I suspect my wife would have had Chad and Biff if she'd been the one exploring.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Anyway, the Bot isn't </span><i style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">obviously</i><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"> AI until you ask a question that requires a specific answer.</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">In my case, when I offered three specific appointment times, it responded with the dealership's hours. That's when I knew I wasn't dealing with a person.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">However, the next step is where the dealerships get it wrong in my estimation.<br/><br/> It’s because the Bot’s routine didn’t include a fundamental question:&nbsp;</span><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">“Do you already have a salesperson you deal with at our dealership?”</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Look, anyone who’s worked in sales of any kind knows that the end of the day, there’s a difference between a “customer” and a “client”.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/> A customer is a transactional type of buyer. Usually a one-off. No prior history, likely no future history.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">A <b><i>client</i></b> is someone who DOES have a history with the dealership. They’ll approach their contact at the dealership first if they have questions.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">However, the way dealerships have implemented AI, it doesn’t reward the dealership-client relationship. It prioritizes the transactional customer interaction.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">What the AI does is hand off the question to an order-taking salesperson, usually new, who’s always on their phone and will react in a Pavlovian way to a notification on their phone.<br/><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">“Someone wants to buy a car!”</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">“Someone wants to buy a car!”</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">“Someone wants to buy a car!”</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Leading to a text – not even a phone call – from said salesperson about the car you inquired about.</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Last week, when this happened to me, I was under the impression that my existing connection at the dealership wasn’t working on the Used Car side of the dealership.<br/><br/> When I got to the dealership, I was met by the salesperson who responded to the lead, AND my existing connection. My existing contact was super professional as always, and simply asked why we hadn’t called. He then explained why HE didn’t get our message, which is that the AI simply broadcasts a notification within the dealership system, and whichever over-eager phone-dweller responds first gets the lead.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Had I not been lazy or rushed in my search, I might have thought to reach out to him first to check if, in fact, he was working with both used and new cars.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">There were a few consequences to my using the AI.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">First, and most importantly, the dealership’s implementation of AI turned me into just another customer, rather than acknowledging my over 20-year association with this particular salesperson. That contributed to small, but mendable damage to my relationship with “our guy.”</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">If the Bot had asked the question above, I feel loyalty will increase. The recognition that the dealership values my business as a client by even asking the question changes the tone of the entire interaction.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The other consequence is that the speed of the notification and response from the other salesperson, although pretty quick, was such <i>that we missed out on the car</i>.<br/><br/> Those few minutes I could have reached out directly would have likely changed the outcome completely.</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The new salesperson was professional, so this isn’t meant to disparage their skills.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">My personal opinion is that by not prioritizing the CLIENT relationship, the industry reinforces the perceived Herb Tarlek &quot;sale-no-matter-what,” and lacks the personal connection that can make car buying such an unpleasant experience.<br/><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">If your business needs repeat business and wants to foster <b><i>client</i></b> relationships, rather than just customer relationships, then think about this when implementing automated sales solutions like chatbots. They can be genuinely terrific, but a small tweak can turn an experience from “endurable” to genuinely engaging and a win for both sides.</span></p></div>

You might remember the bit about accepting the things you cannot change, the courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference.<br/><br/> It’s expressed in a different context by author Trevor Moawad, founder of the company Limitless Minds and author of It Takes What It Takes and Getting to Neutral. Trevor’s work was introduced to me by <a href="https://fowlerperformancecoaching.com/" title="Vince Fowler" rel="" style="text-decoration-line:underline;">Vince Fowler</a>, a mentor and coach in his own business and life, and a good human to know.&nbsp;</span></p><p><br/></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Among the many nuggets of wisdom that lead to “you control what you do next” was how powerful negativity can be relative to positivity. That <i>positivity</i> in and of itself may not work for you, but <i>neutral thinking</i> might. Also, don’t say stupid ***t out loud. Makes me chuckle even now thinking about the way Trevor says it in the audiobook.</span></p><p><br/></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">In any case, the “what you do next” part can be tough to figure out when you’re working on controlling your emotions and the ambient conversation/noise around you is negative.</span></p><p><br/></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">So, I have a life-tested suggestion to help. Strictly for the good of it.</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The ripple effect within you and outside of you may be small, but no less valuable for that.</span></p><p><br/></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Like what?</span></p><p><br/></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">How about leaving an unsigned note with a tip for a server explaining what about their service made your experience better?</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">If you’re getting a coffee for yourself, why not pick up a $5 gift card and leave it anonymously on a coworker’s desk who’s having a tough day?</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">If you spot a homeless person outside a grocery store, grab a deli sandwich and bring it out to them before you shop your list.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">When all else fails…give good hug.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Don’t forget about yourself in all this. Over two days in July a few thousand people will cycle over 200 kilometres for the cause. These are all people who have been touched by cancer in one way or another, whether as survivors of the disease, or people who continue their journey without loved ones and friends lost.</span></div>

<br/><div><span style="font-size:18px;">It also has made me hyper aware of positive pieces on the progress against the diseases that make up “Cancer.” That includes this very short piece in a newsletter called The DeepView, and a section they have every day called AI for Good. In this case, breast cancer detection.</span></div>
<br/><div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">So I have two links for you. The first is to DeepView and the piece noted above on how in a recent controlled trial, AI detected more breast cancers (29%), and reduced workload among clinicians by 44%. It’s such encouraging news and gives a glimpse on how AI works that’s different than say, Chat GPT. <a href="https://www.thedeepview.co/p/you-can-try-jailbreaking-anthropic-s-jailbreaking-cure?_bhlid=9ec3fba69e71b547cede786ba52412caaca92f6f&amp;last_resource_guid=Post%3Ad775c9dd-aacc-4741-9515-d6459a4fbcf4&amp;utm_campaign=you-can-try-jailbreaking-anthropic-s-jailbreaking-cure&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_source=thedeepview" title="Here’s the link " rel=""><span style="text-decoration-line:underline;">Here’s the link</span></a>– scroll down past their lead story and you’ll see the AI for good section.</span></div>

Sometimes, the Right Voice needs to be used with the right communication method. 😁</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">My horoscope for the day yesterday - which I superstitiously consult for fun each day - had this to say: &quot; You can, if you wish, try to act as a peacemaker in a dispute of some kind but the planets warn you probably won’t be successful. Sometimes, the best course of action is to stand back and let others get on with their petty vendettas.&quot;</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Here’s where I’m going with this.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">I’m a co-captain in our community cycling club, One Aim. Our club’s mission is to help riders from our team and any team train up for the annual Enbridge Tour of Alberta for Cancer, in which riders roll for 200 km over two days. Part of that involves training rides in some beautiful locations in Southern Alberta, one of which is in and around Priddis.</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Cyclists have been casually parking <i>for free</i> in the Priddis Community Hall parking lot for many years as a starting point for training rides that are typically 40 - 100 km. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">This leads to conflicts because cyclists will take up a parking space for 2 to 6 hours, depending on the length of the ride, which lessens parking availability for folks using the Hall. Cyclists also show up in significant enough numbers to affect the, ahem, human waste costs for the PortaPotties, which the Priddis Community Association and the hamlet of Priddis pay. They cause the non-profit community association to pay to empty the facilities <i>weekly</i> rather than bi-weekly or monthly when outside of cycling season.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The community association has tried all sorts of measures to educate cyclists about the negative impacts they occasionally have on the community. They’ve tried signage and volunteers informing visitors that the lot is being used by folks who have paid to rent the facility and, by extension, the parking, etc. Another measure they took was to post a sign that said community association membership holders were the only ones who could use the parking lot. However, many cyclists ignore the community association and community’s requests. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Our club recognizes the value of the “free” parking and has purchased memberships with the understanding that if there’s an event at the hall, we’ll find other parking. We also proposed car-pooling to help minimize the number of individual vehicles. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">This conversation has been ongoing in Priddis and throughout Foothills Country for well over 14 years . The problems have become particularly acute since the pandemic, with more and more people discovering cycling.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Last night, these issues were brought forward at a meeting in Priddis at their Community Hall. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The meeting was well attended, including community members, the RCMP (😳), and Foothills County officials. As the only captain of our club available, and despite the horoscope, I went to the meeting to hear the community members' thoughts and perhaps speak on behalf of our club and cyclists.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Our club, One Aim is one of many that ride in the area to help train. There were at least two other Cancer Ride clubs represented there, representing two of the best fundraisers for the cause, and along with our club, contributing a lot of cycling experience to the discussion.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Several long-time residents who spoke were also cyclists.<br/><br/> The meeting was surprisingly positive and very informative. Long-time residents expressed legitimate concerns, mostly about safety but also about the costs imposed on their businesses and the community. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">One local Diner owner mentioned something that most cyclists would never have thought of: that when so many cyclists fill the Community Hall lot, local users of the Community Hall are forced to park in the lot usually reserved for their customers across the street and also along the street in a line of vehicles as long as a quarter kilometer down the road. As a result, many coming for brunch assume by the number of cars that the place is packed and move on to another choice. She mentioned having brunch prepared by her staff and being ready to go in anticipation of a big crowd, and on more than one occasion, literally watched them drive by.&quot;</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Some of the safety stories that emerged for motorists and cyclists were harrowing.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The police spoke of only two riders injured last season in the area, but many expressed their relief that it was only that many. Farmers who haul wide equipment repeatedly spoke of how dangerous their job became when they crested a hill in the area and came upon a group of cyclists riding 4 and 5 across. That’s an unacceptable safety breach by cyclists who don’t realize the danger they put the farmer and his equipment in, as well as themselves. There’s a reason there are signs saying riders must ride single file on those roads.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">In any case, the evening ended with the feeling that the majority of participants who were community members definitely recognized the opportunity presented by tourists and cycling tourists and wanted to keep the community “open.” The next steps include exploring several options presented by a Foothills County councillor and hopefully having a plan in place for the 2025 cycling season.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">A lot of people think texts, emails, and even video calls are the best way to resolve some issues. </span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">In a multistakeholder situation, at a certain point, nothing can replace the value of a face-to-face interaction where mediated conversation leads to well-thought-out options that benefit the greatest number of people.</span></p></div>

</div></div></div></h2></div><div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="text-align:left;"><div style="text-align:right;"><div style="color:inherit;text-align:left;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;">Last week was National Librarian’s Day, but today is “Look Ahead to Next Book Club” day. 😁</span><br/></div>
<div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;"><br/></span></div>
<div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div> One of the reasons I genuinely enjoy almost everything I read from clients in my voice acting career is that I love to read. I love to learn.&nbsp; </div>
<div><br/></div><div> One of the cherries on my life cake is this: I’ve been part of a men’s book club called Liquor and Letters for over twenty years. On the first Tuesday of every month, the guys get together—all seven of us, when we’re lucky—and enjoy a craft beer or two with pizza. Then, we share a new bottle of whisky while we talk about the book, the various things in our lives that the book brings up, and whatever conversational road presents itself. </div>
<div><span style="color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="color:inherit;">When we met earlier in April, we figured that we’d enjoyed over 250 books and the same number of whiskies together.</span><br/></div>
<div><span style="color:inherit;">Today, I thought I’d share some of that literary bounty.</span><br/></div>
<div><span style="color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="color:inherit;">First, let me say this I don’t think you could come up with such a strangely, organically complimentary group of guys from a book standpoint if you tried.</span><br/></div>
<div><br/></div><div> Every one of these guys has a diverse range of interests, and yes, there are “types”, but even when we run against type, there have been such terrific surprises that we *never* would have sought out on our own – and that’s the point isn’t it? To metaphorically go down every road less travelled that we wouldn’t choose ourselves? </div>
<div><br/></div><div> I loved every one of these books for different reasons. Sometimes it was just the writing. Sentences so beautiful you want to frame and preserve them. Amor Towles, Niall Williams and Ray Bradbury are three of the authors in this short list that did that for me.&nbsp; </div>
</div></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/This%20is%20Happiness.jpg" width="200"/></span></figure><div><h3>This is Happiness - Niall Williams</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div><span style="font-size:18px;">In Niall Williams’s This Is Happiness, the ¾ of a page revelation of the title phrase’s meaning was so powerfully arrived at and told that I cried. I left that book for my librarian mom. You know you love a book when you can’t wait to share it and hope that person loves it as much as you do.</span></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/Dandelion%20Wine.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>Dandelion Wine - Ray Bradbury</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;">Dandelion Wine is a Bradbury classic that perfectly crystallizes “boy”, “boyhood,” and nostalgia. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Its sequel, Something Wicked This Way Comes, is rated one of the best books of the 20th century, but it would be a toss-up which of those two I’d rank higher.</span><br/></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/Gentleman%20in%20Moscow.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;">A Gentleman in Moscow is a beautifully told story of a man you’ll wish you knew. And so eloquently laid out that your world is left just a bit more beautiful by the telling.</span><br/></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/Caddyshack.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>Caddyshack: The Making of... - Chris Nashawaty</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Sometimes it’s the absurdity of something so messed up, you can’t believe anything good came out of it. That’d be the Caddyshack story.&nbsp;</span></p></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/History%20of%20Canada.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>A History of Canada in Ten Maps - Adam Shoalts</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;">History told like it *should* be, with life-or-death stakes, villains, antiheroes, and every shade of person in between. And that’s Canadian history as told by Adam Shoalts in A History of Canada In Ten Maps. Among other nuggets in that one is the cartographer who mapped the Pacific Northwest before Lewis and Clark and who *almost* succeeded in Canada having a border south of the 49th!&nbsp;</span><br/></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/Wager.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>The Wager - David Grann</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><p><span style="font-size:18px;">History again, this time in The Wager. It’s the incredible true story of a British shipwreck in the 1700’s that had amazing adventure, the utter futility of war, incredible courage, close calls, tragedy, cannibalism, and the origin of the British Navy that would go on to be the backbone of the world’s biggest ever empire, the British empire. And there’s more!&nbsp; I mean you can’t believe what happens page after page!</span></p></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/American%20Dirt.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>American Dirt - Jeanine Cummins</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;">American Dirt is a book that makes a mockery of the pampered, orange-tinged life of a certain racist US politician, and tells the harrowing story of true courage facing life and death daily to make it to America from deep inside Mexico.</span><br/></div>
</div></div></div></div></div><div><style>.zpelem-imageheadingtext { }</style><div><figure><span style="cursor:pointer;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/Anomaly.jpg" width="200" height="300"/></span></figure><div><h3>The Anomaly - Hervé Le Tellier</h3><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div><span style="font-size:18px;">The Anomaly (not the same story as the mediocre TV show) makes you really wonder about free will. It’s a brilliant blend of crime, fantasy, sci-fi and thriller. I never summarize this one well, so I’ll borrow phrases from the publisher: “In June 2021, a senseless event upends the lives of hundreds of men and women, all passengers on a flight from Paris to New York. Among them: Blake, a respectable family man, though he works as a contract killer; Slimboy, a Nigerian pop star tired of living a lie; Joanna, a formidable lawyer whose flaws have caught up with her; and Victor Miesel, a critically acclaimed yet commercially unsuccessful writer who suddenly becomes a cult hit.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">All of them believed they had double lives. None imagined just how true that was.”</span></div>

</div></div><div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><p><span style="font-size:18px;">There are so many more, but I quickly cherry-picked from the most recent couple of pages of our book database (of course, we have a book database. Ditto one for the whiskies!).</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">&nbsp;</span></p><span style="font-size:18px;"></span><p><span style="font-size:18px;">I hope one of these books piques your interest. </div></div></h2></div><div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="color:inherit;text-align:left;"><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">It’s National Librarians Day today.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Stephen King wrote in his book On Writing that to write, you need to read everything you can get your hands on. Be omnivorous.</span><br/></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Long before I read that, my mom, a librarian at the Kapuskasing Public Library where I grew up, sat me in front of our 20 or 30-volume American encyclopedia when I wanted to learn how to speak English and said essentially, “…Ok, commence avec les “a” (start with the A’s)…”. 😆</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">She instilled a voracious appetite for words and knowledge that is still with me. Now that I think about it, King’s likely satisfied it more than any other author.</span></div>
<div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;"><br/></span></div>
<div style="color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;font-size:18px;">It’s also one of the main reasons I genuinely revel in the opportunity to narrate scripts of every kind, every day, in two languages, as a voice actor. eLearning scripts are a map to treasure to be discovered. As a voice actor, I love the thought of helping a learner find the X that marks the spot where they now KNOW something new.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Partially inspired by my wife, whose mom was a teacher, and my librarian mom, I’ve enjoyed having a guy’s book club for over twenty years. We call it Liquor &amp; Letters, and we have a bottle of whisky every month to “facilitate” the conversation over a book one of us picked. We reflected just last week that, as a club, we’ve wandered through a fabulously eclectic collection of over 250 books in our time together. Ditto the whisky variety – but that’ll be another post. 🥃</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Pause for a moment to think of librarians who share their passion and who make the road less traveled a path possible to imagine for their young charges.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">From story time for elementary kids (pictured) to feeding adolescents novels and non-fiction of growing complexity, they continue to deliver joy in bound pages for their curious customers.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:center;color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></div>
<div style="text-align:center;color:inherit;"><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/IMG_1486.jpeg" style="color:inherit;width:502.54px !important;height:376px !important;max-width:100% !important;"/><img src="https://www.paulboucher.com/images/IMG_2774.jpeg" style="width:502.9px !important;height:375px !important;max-width:100% !important;"/><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">How many terrific writers were inspired by something a librarian chose for them? The librarian respected their intelligence and trusted them to find their way through. It’s a vote of confidence in your intelligence that you don’t find from just anyone. It helps inspire the fabulous hubris that leads to fantastic flights of imagination from Tolkien to Franzen to King. It builds the mental muscle to inspire less fantasy with facts from Smil, Harari, and Bryson.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Libraries are a powerful equalizing force. I’ll never forget walking into my mom’s library office in 1984 and seeing a beige IBM PC and asking her what THAT was. She explained that it was the Inter-Library Loan Computer and that with the program, even in our small town, students could get any book they needed sent to them from the bigger cities in the south. In my mind, it was a bridge to the rest of the world. That notion has forever been at the base of my belief that the Internet is one of the most potent forces for good in the hands of most of the world.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Where I now live, in Calgary, the new Central Library is that bridge for new Canadians. They access language classes, study for the citizenship test, and find resources to help them understand the strange new context they’ve landed in – and how their life and experiences can become part of the fabric of their new community.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">If you haven’t been to a library branch in a while, I encourage you to wander into the closest one, look for one of your favorite authors, pull up a chair, put your phone on DND, and get lost in the forest of letters that always end up being so much more than the sum of their parts.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Take your kids. Let them discover the visceral joy of judging a book by its cover…and delight in showing them how there’s sometimes more to it than that. It’s a profound pleasure we often take for granted.</span><br/></div>
<div><br/></div><div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">I’ve loved sharing my love of reading with my kids. Bedtime story times are still some of my most treasured memories with them.</span></div>
<div style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:18px;">This means that I owe some of the best moments of my life to what I was taught by a librarian. So, on National Librarians Day, I’m toasting my librarian mom and librarians everywhere.<br/></span></div>

<div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div><span style="font-size:18px;">I’m excerpting a piece of Avery Swartz’ LinkedIn post:</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;font-style:italic;">“So many inspirational business keynotes focus on the “grit” and the “grind” of entrepreneurs waking up at 5am, taking calls with their lawyers while they go into labour, and working late on Sunday nights.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-style:italic;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;font-style:italic;">Can we just… not? Can we stop celebrating and platforming this nonsense?...”</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">The whole post brought forth some terrific comments, and wasn’t much longer. You can find it <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/averyswartz_so-many-inspirational-business-keynotes-focus-activity-7169356162067279872-bzYt" title="here" rel="" style="text-decoration-line:underline;">here</a>.</span></div>
</div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">First, outside of the obvious point that Avery could/should do that keynote. 😊, it made me stop and reflect on the difference in the definitions of success in different cultures. Specifically, the more balanced “work to live” success favored by many European cultures.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">And like Avery pointed out, we need MORE people talking about some of the realities of being an entrepreneur WITHOUT the extreme of seeing a post and feeling like we need to call a mental health hotline to talk someone off a ledge.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">There are all sorts of possibilities. From the easy things like how entrepreneurs would either be the best employee they've EVER been returning to a job to how they could never be an employee again. To the more complicated and real wakeup call (for many) as they approach the end of an entrepreneurial career: how about that pension?!! 😧</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">So, I’ll summarize the financial advice portion that we already know: create a goal, plan early, revisit plan, keep planning continuously, revisit goal, plan some more.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">As for the living as an Entrepreneur – I don’t think I can recommend a finer book about the perils and triumphs of entrepreneurship than The E-Myth Revisited. I’ll point you to one of the key ideas in the book salient to this discussion: “Start a business to satisfy a personal aim in life.”&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">If you give your “personal aim” even a modicum of thought, some of the things that might occur to you as you plan are:</span><br/></div>
<br/><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Time:</span>&nbsp;How do I want to spend it?</span><br/></div>
<br/><div><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Limits:</span>&nbsp;What do I want my life to look and feel like? A lot of entrepreneurs make the terrible mistake of not visualizing this until they reach a crisis point in their relationships, their business, their lives where they realize all this time, they WERE in charge, and it all came down to THEIR OWN smart choices (or, the other kind).</span></div><span style="font-weight:bold;"><br/></span><div><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">How much is enough?</span> What does “enough” REALLY mean?</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">This is a much larger conversation but the essential points I’d want to make to my entrepreneurial self and peers 25 years ago are:&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Chill. You’re smart enough. You care about the right things. You understand your customers are important, but not as important as your new baby girl, or your spouse.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">STOP</span> trying to make an inauthentic “keep up with the Joneses” impression. Be smart with choices involving $. It will make things SO much easier down the line. But, also understand the seemingly contradictory wisdom of “you need to spend money to make money.”</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Keep learning. It helps to make sure the fun never stops. It may pause, but you need to know that if you’re doing all the other work, it will be just a pause, and the fun and the success, both in your life and your business, will resume.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">That may seem very naïve or far too simplistic, but simple is often the best.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">So, yes, enough worshipping at the altar of the unhealthy, purely materialistic “all in” mentality. It’s time to embrace the life you want to lead while running your business and understanding which serves which.&nbsp;</span><br/></div>

</div><div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><p><span style="font-size:18px;">A professional voiceover can make or break the effectiveness of your video. With the rise of freelance voiceover artists, it can be tempting to choose the lowest-priced option. However, it's important to consider the value you receive when deciding on a voiceover artist.</span></p><p><br/></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">While price is an important factor, it shouldn't be the only one you consider. That goes double for a project requiring fluently professional bilingual voiceover talent. A lower-priced voiceover artist may seem like a bargain at first glance, but if the quality in either language isn't there, it can end up costing you more in the long run. Poor audio quality or an unprofessional delivery can make your video seem amateurish, and ultimately harm your brand's reputation.</span></p><p><br/></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">On the other hand, investing in a professional, experienced voiceover artist can pay off in spades. A high-quality voiceover can elevate your video from good to great, and help your brand stand out in a crowded marketplace. A professional voiceover artist will have a range of vocal styles and tones, and will be able to deliver your message with clarity and emotion, making your video more engaging and effective.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><br/></span></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">I can’t count over the years, the number of times I was approached, declined on price, then revisited to “repair/rescue” a project. Naturally the client would request a discount due to already having paid for the voiceover. Um, no.&nbsp;</span></p><p><br/></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">In addition to the quality of the voiceover itself, a professional voiceover artist <span style="font-style:italic;">will provide a level of service that a lower-priced freelancer may not. </span>A professional artist will be responsive, communicative, and able to provide a quick turnaround time. They will also have the equipment and expertise to deliver high-quality audio files that can be easily integrated into your video production.</span></p><p><br/></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">Ultimately, the value of a professional voiceover artist comes down to the impact it can have on your video and <span style="font-style:italic;">your</span> brand – not just your client’s brand. While it may cost more upfront, a high-quality voiceover can help you achieve your goals and make your investment in the video production process worthwhile. As an explainer video producer, it's important to consider both the price and the value when selecting a voiceover artist for your project.</span></p><p><br/></p><p><span style="font-size:18px;">To wrap up, when choosing a freelance voiceover artist, don't let price be the only determining factor. Consider the value that a professional voiceover artist can bring to your project in terms of quality, service, and impact on your brand. Investing in a professional voiceover artist can pay off in the long run and make your video production process more successful.</span></p></div>

</div><div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div><span style="font-size:18px;">But have you ever wondered what a day in the life of your voice actor looks like?&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Here’s a quick look at the daily routine of a professional voice actor, and how their productivity, service, communication, and speed of response can impact your eLearning projects.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">First things first, as a busy, working voice actor, I’ve always fancied myself a “time architect” and every day is a client-centric. Each day needs to be realistic and workable so that expectations are exceeded if possible, but at the very least, met.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">I typically start my day by checking emails and ye old calendar, likely over breakfast (but after solving Wordle!). I’ll respond promptly to any new requests or messages. Communication is key, so a good voice actor will prioritize prompt and clear communication with their clients to ensure that everything runs smoothly.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">A voice actor will typically warm up their voice with exercises and vocal drills. I end up sorta singing my responses to client emails and messages before hitting “Send”. It ends being a reminder I’ve picked the right career talking, haha, and it has always felt efficient and helped to set the tone of any messages.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Next, out go the pyjamas, on go the “work clothes” and real shoes, and the recording begins! A voice actor’s home studio set up will be optimized to deliver high-quality (often referred to as broadcast-quality/ready) recordings that meet the client's expectations.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">As the day goes on, a voice actor will take breaks as needed to rest their voice and recharge. For example, I find that if I noticed myself “checking out” for even a sentence, the first thing I’ll do is retake that sentence, then take 5 to ”reset”. If working on multiple projects as I do each day, I’ll use this time to review and edit recordings, ensuring they’re of the highest quality and ready for the client's QA/review process. It’s all about attention to detail.</span><br/></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Communication never stops! Throughout the day, your voice actor will respond promptly to any client requests or questions. They may also provide feedback and suggestions for the script or delivery. It’s a collaboration. Email is best for a track record, but I also have 5 messaging platforms open to chat and collaborate with clients and prospective clients.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">There’s an old message from Shari Lewis (Lamb Chop on Ed Sullivan WAY back) that became a command early in my business/voice career: <span style="font-style:italic;">&quot;The next day begins with preparing the night before&quot;</span>. At the end of the day, I plan for the next day's work.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">So, as much fun as we have pretty much all day, every day, there’s an unrelenting focus on productivity, service, communication, and speed of response. As an eLearning instructional designer, it's important to choose a voice actor who can meet these standards and deliver the best possible training materials for your learners.</span></div>

</div><div><style>.zpelem-text { }</style><div><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div style="color:inherit;"><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Instead, imagine taking off and leaving it all behind to follow a passion. Not forever, but a meaningful enough amount of time to rediscover yourself, leave “digital” and almost everything it conjures in your imagination behind, and frankly just to stop. Love a bit more deeply – people, the world and all the beauty in it. And maybe, find a way to live in the present moment, unshackling yourself from your past – or perhaps more accurately, put it in its place: the past.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Over the past several years, and especially during the pandemic, I began to appreciate my visceral need to be connected to the physical environment I’m in, and like-minded people to do it with.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Fortunately, I live an hour away from the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park, not to mention the even closer provincial area called Kananaskis (where Leonardo DiCaprio starred in The Revenant, where Inception filmed that fabulous Snow Fortress sequence, etc.).</span><br/></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">As a result, in 2017, I refocused my energy into some favourite physical pursuits, road cycling and hiking. In doing that, the most incredible people dropped into my life.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">After numerous hikes, I also rediscovered a nearly 20-year-old desire to trek the Camino de Santiago, originally inspired by a friend who’d read Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage, and then done the trek. Last year, I was re-inspired after another friend’s trek on the Camino. That was a gift to my imagination that I would have been a fool to turn away.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">This time, I acted to make it happen.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">I didn’t succumb to the trap a lot of self-employed people fall into, which is NOT doing something based on fear.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">Fear of being away for three weeks. Fear of not generating revenue for that time. Whatever.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;"><br/></span></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;color:inherit;">Instead, I thought, HOW MANY TIMES have I allowed that sort of reasoning to turn me away from something that I genuinely want to do before I die (call it a bucket list item if you prefer)? Isn’t that at least ONE of the reasons I’m self-employed? Other than likely being unemployable now after 24 years of being my own boss. LOL.</span><br/></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">So, for the next few weeks I’ll undertake the first section of the Camino Francés route stretching from St jean Pied de Port in France, to Burgos in Northern Spain. As a bonus, I’ll be sharing the adventure with my 18-year-old son.&nbsp; One of the interesting things about being a dad a second time is how aware I’ve become of how much richer bonds can be when the kids know you as more than just a parent – and I, in turn know them as more than “just” the kids.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">This isn’t the sort of adventure our family could have supported during my childhood/adolescence (means, scope to travel, blah, blah). I would have LOVED to do something like this with my dad. He’s been gone since 1993 (way too young), but I like to visualize him wearing a “NO FEAR” T-shirt and applauding as we set out.&nbsp;</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">I look forward to returning refreshed, and likely humbled a bit, to tell new stories.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">For now, though, I’ll say goodbye to my padded room, my microphone, and the familiarity of “the usual” for three weeks. I’m grateful for every step so far, and every one to come.</span></div>
<div><br/></div><div><span style="font-size:18px;">May YOU check a passion item on your bucket list this year. No fear. Eyes, arms, and heart wide open. It’ll do you good!</span></div>
